Composite Image: Banks Penninsula, New Zealand

The Banks Peninsula on the South Island of New Zealand is home to many natural bays and harbors. The peninsula is also the island's main volcanic feature. The peninsula resulted from the eroded remains of two large stratovolcanoes that were formed by intraplate volcanism on a continental crust approximately eight to eleven million years ago.
