About the Sally Ride EarthKAM Erosion Challenge

Annotated image of the Australian coast

Weathering and erosion create many of Earth’s unique landforms. During the April 23 through April 26, 2013, Sally Ride EarthKAM mission, students requested images of locations on Earth that have undergone weathering and/or erosion, such as glaciers, mountains, coastlines, river deltas, and sand dunes. Schools were invited to submit one image from the mission, along with a paragraph (250 words or less) describing how the image shows the effects of weathering and/or erosion to the Sally Ride EarthKAM Erosion Challenge.

School groups that submitted the top five entries* have been invited to a live videoconference with a NASA astronaut at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, on May 17, 2013. During this interactive videoconference, students will have a chance to share their winning images and chat with the astronaut. All schools participating in the mission will be invited to view the webcast and submit questions online for the astronaut.

Entering the Sally Ride EarthKAM Erosion Challenge

  • Schools had to email a Sally Ride EarthKAM image showing weathering and/or erosion and a description (250 words or less)
    to ek-help@earthkam.ucsd.edu.
  • Only one entry was allowed from each school group.
  • Entries had to be received by Friday, May 3, 2013.
